You are indeed right in thinking that. To be honest, you are probably
better directing these sorts of questions to jbits@xilinx.com We do
read the newsgroup but you'll get a quicker answer if you go straight to
the horses mouth as it were.

Why a pair? See XAPP052 for all tap settings for LFSRs up to 168 bit length

Perhaps. With XNOR feedback, it is the all-ones state that must normally be
avoides, since it latches up.
Decode the state before and put an aditioanl XOR in the feedback. The decoding
can be pipelined, and the XOR be hidden in a LUT, so, at best, there is no loss
of speed.
But it takes extra LUTs for the decoding. For vely long LFSRs, there are ways
to coint the long string of 1s, but that may be too exotic.

To generate "random" test patterns, LFSRs are unbeatable.

You can pipeline that as much as needed. (You just have to look for
a different magic constant.)

Come on guys. It's all about types. For example, jsut look at C/C++.
Without regarding the OO aspects of C++, one of the most powerful
introductions of it comparing to C was the HARD TYPE CHECKING
capabilities it offers, which allows to easily find mistakes and make
all the coding stage of a design easier, since it's not just about
writing lots of lines of code, but to make it work as desired.

Who wants to spend long hours coding to find at the end that while it
compiles it doesn't work as expected? And then, spend more and more
hours attempting to find the bugs? What about "time to market"? Isn't
it coding pointing (among other purposes) to design verification? And
what if that verification is exposed to failure from the very beginning?

Hello!

Can anyone point me to Altera's MAX+PlusII Output files to .HEX format
converter utilities? Or to explanations about the format of these files?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

well according to the MAX+PlusII Version You're using, it's called Convert
SRAM
Object File (I believe they changed it in version 9.x) as in earlier version
it was called different. It is in the File menue, when the Compiler window
is opened and the "active" window. Otherwise You won't find this option.

This message concerns anyone who may be considering getting DSL service
in the near future.
-
I strongly urge you to spend some time in COMP.DCOM.XDSL before you chose
a provider. If you do, it will become immediately apparent that Verizon,
or any of the BabyBells are clearly the worst choices.
-
The Internet is littered with consumer horror stories from people who failed
to do any research before signing-up for DSL. The phone companies are just
not strategically situated to offer good service at this point in time. Too
many union constraints... nightmarish bureaucracy... antiquated corporate
culture... conflicting priorities - and then list goes on and on. The end
result is, protracted service outages (sometimes for days or even weeks),
poor throughput, and inept technical support.
-
Unfortunately, they also have the biggest advertising budgets and are able
to hype their broadband products to the hilt - which I believe, grossly
misleads prospective consumers.
-
Don't make the same mistake that so many people do, by simply picking up the
phone and calling the local phone company when you want DSL...

Subject: FFs in IOBs in XC4000
From: Andreas Doering <doering@iti.mu-luebeck.de>

in a XC40250 design I want to
use the DFF for an input in the IOB but I want to use the
signal from the PAD directly, too.

Synopsys FPGA compiler generates a FDC symbol which map
seems not to be able to push into the IOB (-pr b WAS used!).
Using the IFD symbol (by replacing in the XNF using a perl script)
gives an error in NGDBUILD.
Obviously, the IFD contains the IBUF already.
Hence, there is a conflict with the IBUF driving the direct
input.

Is there a way to achieve this double usage?
Which symbol do I need for the FF?

Thank you in advance!

Andreas

I've seen this money making opportunity for some time now &
ignored it many many times thinking it was a scam.
You may think it is a scam too, like I did but if you read on and give
this the shot it deserves and follow the letter in what it asks from
you....you will be amazed, surprised and there's no telling how much
money you can make by doing this.
I just couldn't imagine the money people were talking about in this
letter and that it was obtainable but you know the old saying "If it
sounds too good to be true, it probably is.".... So I continued to
ignore it but I kept seeing it posted in the different newsgroups I
read.
A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you
are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could
make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment
of $6.00!
So I thought," Yeah, right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I
was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to
each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place
your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the
article in at least 200 newsgroups.
Finally the curiosity in me was the motivation after reading the letter
many times and thinking to myself, "six dollars is not much to
risk"....besides, I've lost that much in seconds playing lotteries,
betting at the track or going to a casino not to mention sports pools at
work with the latest game of the week up for grabs. The thing that I
notice is.... we live in a gambling society. How many of us spend that
on cigarettes, lottery tickets and other wastes of our money? How many
of us invest? Isn't the stock market a gamble too? People say it's an
investment but it's also a gamble.... there are no sure things in life
but this idea of risking $6.00 to me is NOT a gamble. It has already
worked for me and I have seen the results. I can't believe this worked
and the more I post this, the more I make!!! I like to think of this as
an investment and the wonderful dividends it provides to the honest
person who partakes in this great opportunity. Hey Christmas is around
the corner and with people contributing to their Christmas Clubs in
their banks for that special time of the year...this certainly gets you
there a lot faster and besides....it's a lot more lucrative then I ever
imagined. The interest banks pay to the consumer is very low...wait till
you see the return on your $6.00 with this!!! This is one time I'm glad
the better of me decided to "go for it" and it has made a believer out
of me. Try this...you will become a believer too and you will be very
happy that you decided to take a chance. The risk is virtually non
existent but the potential gains and rewards is outrageous and will
change your lifestyle.
READ ON €€€€ Here's how it works just follow the instructions
like it says and this will work for you too. By the way you may have
seen this before but this has worked over and over and with new people
joining the net everyday the rewards are endless. OK LET'S GET STARTED:
THIS REALLY WORKS!! THIS REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WORKS!!!
BUT YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO A LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!! Like most of us
I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of
it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161)
and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I invested the small
sum of $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting
money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the
money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the
end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the
third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my
fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's
still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps.
Let me tell you how this works and most
importantly, why it works....also, make sure you print a copy of this
article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it.
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each
piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00
bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill
will not be seen through the envelope to prevent theft. OK, Next, place
one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have
6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase,
your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating
a service by this. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! Mail the 6 envelopes to the
following addresses:
  #1)S. Oliver, 1440 Whalley #254, New Haven, CT 06515 #2)L. Berry,
815 69th AVE. W. , Bradenton,FL 34207 #3)Alison Key, 28 Kimberly Acres
Dr., Jackson, SC 29831 #4William Brown, 100 High St., Passaic, NJ 07055
#5)Traby Jones, 4615 Maddox St. # 4, Beaumont, TX 77705 #6) Alexander
Kosek,#314 13300-56 S Cleveland Ave,Ft Myers FL 33907 STEP 2: Now take the #1
name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes
5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3:
Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to
original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200
newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is
200, but remember, the
more you post, the more money you make!
---DIRECTIONS---HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS---- Step 1) You do not need to
retype this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor
at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of
this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the
entire letter into the computers memory.
Step 2) Open a blank "notepad" file under accessories in windows and
place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu
select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so
that you can add your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do
your postings in different sittings, you'll always have this file to go
back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various
newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new
message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from
the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that
everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a
particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your
first one!
Congratulations...THAT'S IT!
All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after
you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each
newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL
MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin
receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually
want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive.
If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as
the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE
CORRECT.**
Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a
very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the
letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the
MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond
to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25
each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each,
I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn
around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5
replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now here is the fun
part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name
at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me
$3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200
newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups
react I will receive $15,625,00! With a original investment of only
$6.00! AMAZING!
When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest
posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the
list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The
thing to remember is, do you realize that thousands of people all over
the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday,
JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So can you afford $6.00 and see if it really
works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out
and no one sends you the
money?" So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are
tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the
internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try?
Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands
of those joining the actual internet.
Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will work. Thanks for
participating
P.S. Tell your friends the more that participate the better it is for
everyone

was curious, so I kept reading.
P.S. Tell your friends the more that participate the better it is for
everyone

Subject: XC9500 and unused inputs

Yes I know that the XC9500 isn't an FPGA but this seems like the best
place
to ask...

I'm using an XC95288XL in a new design. It sits on a microcontroller
address
and data bus to implement some simple I/O. I chose to run all the
address
bus lines to the CPLD but chose not to use all of them in the address
decoder
within the CPLD. After scratching my head for a few hours, I discovered
that
the CPLD was outputting signals on the unused input pins! You can guess
what
the bus looked like...

I'm using Synplicity and using the lastest Xilinx tools.

Both the synthesis tool and the fitter make note that the input pins
have
no load. It seems suprising to me that the fitter would assume that it
could drive those pins. I did a quick search of the Xilinx site and
didn't see anything relevant.

I did a quick work-around by and-ing all the unused address pins
together
and driving an output pin. Everything worked afterwards.

Am I doing something wrong or is the a tool problem? Any ideas?

Bob.

If you have 'programmable grounds' enabled, unused I/O pins will be
driven to ground when the device is programmed and powered.

I think you can use PROHIBIT in the ucf file to prevent 'reserved' (unused)
pins from being driven, while still driving all other unconnected pins
to GND.

e.g.  CONFIG PROHIBIT = P3,P45,P99,P121,P143 ;

See Xilinx Answer 9385.

Paul.

p.s. if you own a Psion 5 or 7 or Revo, I have a database of Xilinx info!

This device has bus-hold on all pins - it drives its inputs via 50k to the
curreent level. You can't disable it.

I missed this one too.

It would be nice to change init
values after PAR ended.
The alliance 3.1i FPGA editor allows
scripting.
Using scripts you can:
search the PAR-ed ncd for the net
names of the ROM outputs.
from that: deduce CLB site names
from that: deduce CLB component names
And using that, set the new init values you want.
The searching need only be done once.

This actually worked for the 4K series pretty well;
Note: the PAR router mixes ROM and RAM address lines during routing, so you must reorder the INIT bits.

By the way: anyone had any success using the FPGA editor piping (pipe command)?; it would certainly be useful for me; Pipes open but never close, and commands sent are ignored.

True enough, but what you're not mentioning is that C++ is also powerful
enough that you can sit around and create your own copy or conversion
constructors that take in any other object type and convert it to whatever
you're really after. VHDL doesn't allow such flexibility -- operating
overloading is about as close as you get. And you can't even overload the
assignment operator! (The fact that resolution functions are not well
supported by synthesis is also unfortunate.)

Granted, this functionality can be abused in C++, and the list of rules on
how a C++ compiler is supposed to find the right operator is long enough to
choke a horse, but there C++ is just being true to its C roots -- all the
power you want, seat belts are optional.

We've got a bunch of people where I work who complain about the use of
'const' in C++ ("Now I have to make all my code const-correct to call your
functions!") and exception handling (we actually have one guy who was trying
to convince me not to throw him an exception if he fed me garbage because,
"Hidden bugs are better than crashing applications," i.e., he wasn't about
to catch the exception himself, hence Windoze would, and shut down his
program... arrrggghhh!); these are probably the same people who only see the
annoyance and none of the benefit of VHDL's strict type checking. (I see
the benefit, but I still find it annoying at times. :-) )

Subject: How can I design FPGA based RISC processors?
From: harveytwyman@my-deja.com

Question originally from : dschang@bellsouth.net

Usually because of their complexity, companies will purchase processor
designs.

"Cores" or "MegaCores" as the're normally referred to are pruchased
with a single one-off payment. This purchases the licence to replicate
infinitely the circuit on your own products.

I investigated some of these cores and simple decices such as UARTS
cost around 5000 UK pounds. However a Z80 microprocessor would be
50,000 UK pounds! I think you could estimate other processor costs from
this based on their current popularity and the fact that in this
example, the Z80 went out of production over 10 years ago.

The cores usually come written in VHDL for portability which enables
them to fit into ANY device large enough to hold the design.

Designing your own is perfectly feasible. However you must consider not
only the time taken to develop the design but also the time taken to
FULLY evaluate it.

Simulation is the normal method used for evaluating circuit design.
However with a processor design, inputting stimulii that resembles an
executing program would be immense. Therefore the evaluation would have
to be done on a REAL processor circuit executing a REAL program.
Consider where to look when the program CRASHES the processor - where
do you even start to look for the problem?

This is the reason for the high purchase price - you're getting a
circuit design that WORKS!

Thanks for the pointer...

I don't think that's what I'm seeing. The signal that was being output
on the input pin was a clock signal - it looked to be one of the stages
of a clock divider that's part of the design. The other input pins had
other dynamic signals being output.

I'll look at the fitter report and see if that signal is associated
with the same function block and macro cell as the input pin.

It's defininately not a 'bus keep', week pull up, or 'programmable
ground' as far as I can tell.

I've been tinkering with Xilinx's Webpack software and am rather
impressed with it.

If I now make up my own design of board up with a CPLD on it, where is
it defined exactly how to go from the Jedec file output by the tools
to doing things to the Jtag signals ?

Ideally I expect to have to solder up a lead from say a standard
parallel port to my board then ideally take a program and fill in the
bits that say "insert code for raising tms here" and the like. Is
there such a thing I can download ?

Isn't this a FAQ ?
